What adults can learn from kids
In her TED Talk “What Adults Can Learn from Kids,” the then-12-year-old Adora Svitak invites us to rethink what it means to be childish. Not as something dismissive or naive, but as a source of imagination, optimism, and fearless creativity. These are the very strengths we lose as we get older.
Drawing from her own experience growing up and observing how easily adults limit big ideas with rules and “realism,” Adora challenges the assumption that wisdom only flows one way from grown-ups to children. Instead, she argues that kids’ unfettered dreaming and unselfconscious curiosity are powerful reminders of how progress happens even in the adult world. What happens when we let ourselves imagine what others believe to be impossible?
Adora points out that adults often underestimate young people’s abilities, but when trust and encouragement replace scepticism, some amazing ideas can emerge. She encourages adults to listen more deeply, to trust others’ potential and thoughts, regardless of age, and to adopt a mindset that values possibility over constraint and “safety”.
