Watch Over Me

There’s a particular kind of mental load that comes with doing ordinary things alone, a walk at night, a solo run, a drive somewhere new. It’s not always fear exactly. It’s the background hum of knowing you’re the only one who knows where you are, and that if something happened, no one would know to look. That hum is exhausting to carry at the best of times, let alone when you’re healing, and you shouldn’t have to carry it on your own.

The Resilient Blueprint is a resource site I built as a survivor for those who are safe and working through what rebuilding actually looks like day to day.

What It Is

Watch Over Me is a personal safety app available on both iOS and Android, downloadable for free from the App Store and Google Play, and available globally. It works differently from a panic button: rather than requiring you to press something in a moment of danger, you set a timer at the start of an activity (a run, a walk home, an outing) and the app monitors you until you check in safely. If you don’t check in before your time runs out, it automatically alerts your designated emergency contacts with your location. It also has a shake-to-alarm feature: shaking the phone triggers an immediate alert to contacts and activates the camera to begin recording. The core features are free; a premium subscription unlocks additional emergency contacts, SMS alerts, and video recording.

Why It’s Here

The early stages of independence after an abusive relationship isn’t always about dramatic fear. Sometimes it’s just the weight of not having someone who knows where you are. For years, someone may have always known your movements, even if that knowledge was used as control rather than care. Learning to go places alone, on your own terms, carries its own complexity.

Watch Over Me is built around a simple idea: you tell it where you’re going and how long you’ll be, and it keeps watch until you confirm you’re home safe. That structure supports the part of you that’s still learning to trust its own autonomy. You just have to remember to check in when you’re safe.

How It Works

  • Download the app for free on iOS or Android. No subscription required for core features
  • Set up your emergency contacts within the app. These are the people who will be notified if you don’t check in
  • Before any outing, set a timer for how long the activity will take and start tracking. The app monitors your GPS location for the duration
  • Tap “I’m Safe” before the timer runs out to confirm you’re okay and dismiss the alert
  • If you don’t check in on time, the app automatically sends your location to your emergency contacts via email or Facebook; SMS alerts require a premium subscription.
  • In an immediate emergency, shaking the phone triggers an instant alert and activates the camera to begin recording
  • Note: Watch Over Me is an established app and core features are well-reviewed, but it is older than some alternatives in this category

Who This Is For and Who It Might Not Be For

This might resonate if you:

  • Are rebuilding a solo routine. Walking, running, exercising, or going places alone, and want something that runs quietly in the background without requiring you to do anything during the activity itself
  • Prefer a timer-based check-in model over a held-button or panic-button approach, particularly useful when your hands will be occupied or when you want something that works without thinking
  • Are based outside the US and need a globally available option; Watch Over Me works internationally, unlike some alternatives in this category

It might not be the right fit if:

  • You don’t currently have reliable emergency contacts to add, like bSafe. This app works through a personal network rather than professional monitoring, so it depends on having someone available to respond.
  • You want the most current, actively updated safety app available. This is a more established app, and you should confirm the current version is well-maintained before relying on it as a primary safety tool.
