The Science of Emotions

In The Science of Emotions TED Talk, neuroscientist Jaak Panksepp explains that emotions are not purely psychological experiences. They are biological systems built deep into the brain through evolution. He argues that emotions evolved to help mammals survive, guiding behaviour through curiosity, fear, care, and joy. Rather than being created by higher thinking alone, emotions originate in ancient subcortical brain structures that humans share with other animals.

Panksepp introduces seven core emotional systems, including seeking, fear, care, panic/grief, and play, that operate automatically and shape how we respond to the world. These systems influence motivation, attachment, safety, and connection long before conscious thought kicks in. By understanding emotions as hard-wired neural circuits, Panksepp reframes mental health struggles not as personal failings, but as dysregulated biological systems, opening the door to more compassionate, science-based approaches to emotional wellbeing and healing.
