The Courage to Be Disliked
Authors : Ichiro Kishimi and Fumitake Koga
Publication Year : 2013
The Courage to Be Disliked is a thought-provoking book that presents a dialogue
between a philosopher and a young man seeking answers to life’s challenges. The book
explores the principles of Alfred Adler’s Individual Psychology, emphasising the idea
that personal happiness is achievable through understanding and accepting one’s
freedom to choose and live authentically.
Why I loved it: The book offers a powerful message about self-acceptance, the futility
of comparison, and the importance of living authentically. By embracing the courage to
be disliked and focusing on what truly matters, you are encouraged to free yourself from
societal expectations and achieve lasting happiness by building the life you want to
lead, not the life you are expected to have by others. This book is by far one of my
favourites that I continue to return to, it was an absolute game changer for me. I love the
way the message was delivered as a conversation, this allowed me to process the
concepts being delivered much quicker.
