It gets exhausting not understanding your own reactions. Feeling too much in one moment and completely shut down in the next, and not being able to explain either one. When you’ve been in an abusive relationship that rewired the way you read the world, your nervous system picks up and carries that long after you’re safe. Making sense of what’s happening inside you isn’t self-indulgent. It’s a necessary. And it’s usually the kind of work that can go further with a trained person alongside you.
I’ve returned to professional therapy whenever I’ve needed it and I have a preference for online because the flexibility removes all logistic issues. I built The Resilient Blueprint as a survivor, for those who are doing their healing work on the others side of abuse.Â
What it is
Talkspace is an online therapy and psychiatry platform available via browser and app.Â
It offers individual therapy, and psychiatric medication management, accessible through text messaging, live chat, phone, and video sessions.Â
Therapy plans are subscription-based; psychiatry is session-based and priced separately. For people with US insurance, including most major plans such as Cigna, Aetna, Optum, Anthem, BCBS, TRICARE, and Medicare Part B, the average copays run $15–$30 per session, and many insured members pay nothing. Out-of-pocket pricing starts at $69 per week for messaging-only therapy, with higher tiers including live sessions and access to workshops.Â
FSA and HSA cards are accepted. A lower-cost self-guided option, Talkspace Go, is available for those who don’t need one-to-one care. Talkspace is available across all 50 US states, Canada, and the UK; international self-pay access is possible in other countries, but the platform is primarily built for US insurance users.Â
If you are outside of these locations but interested in the ability to meet with a therapist online, then try Betterhelp instead.Â
Why it’s here
There are two things Talkspace does that distinguish it from most online therapy platforms, and both matter for TRB’s audience.
The first is insurance integration. Talkspace is in-network with most major US insurance providers and Medicare, which means for a significant portion of people, therapy through this platform is genuinely affordable in a way that out-of-pocket platforms aren’t. That removes a real barrier.
The second is that Talkspace offers access to psychiatry alongside therapy. For some survivors, what’s happening in the body isn’t purely psychological. Anxiety, sleep disruption, hypervigilance, and low mood can reach a point where medication is part of the picture to support you.Â
The messaging format also matters here. Being able to reach your therapist between sessions, when a memory surfaces, or a situation triggers something you need to name before it disappears, is a real functional difference from the scheduled-session model of traditional therapy.
How it works
- Sign up, answer intake questions about what you’re looking for, and get matched with a therapist. This typically within a few hours to a couple of days.
- Check your insurance eligibility directly on the site before committing. This can be done without creating an account.
- Communicate with your therapist via text messaging at any time; live sessions (video, phone, or chat) are available on higher-tier plans and can be added to any plan.
- Psychiatry is accessed separately and is session-based rather than subscription-based
- Talkspace Go (a lower-cost, self-guided option with live therapist-led workshops) is available at a lower monthly rate with a 7-day free trial.
- Talkspace cannot provide diagnoses in all states, cannot fulfill court orders, and is not appropriate for acute crisis situations.
- Note: if you cancel mid-subscription, Talkspace charges for the full billing period. This is worth knowing before you sign up.
Who this is for and who it might not be for
This might resonate if you:
- Are in the US and have insurance through a major provider. Talkspace’s insurance coverage is one of the most comprehensive in the online therapy space.
- Want both therapy and the option to explore psychiatric support within the same platform if it becomes relevant.
- Value being able to message your therapist between sessions as things come up, rather than holding everything for a scheduled hour.
It might not be the right fit if:
- Digital privacy is a core concern for you and for many survivors, it is.Â
- You are outside the US. Talkspace’s insurance integration does not extend to international users.
- Budget is the limiting factor and you don’t have qualifying insurance. Without coverage, costs add up, and unlike BetterHelp, Talkspace does not offer a financial aid programme.
