If you’ve ever quietly talked yourself out of booking therapy because the whole process feels like too much of a gamble you’re not alone in that. The cost of getting it wrong is real: spending money on a session that doesn’t feel right, with a person you don’t trust, at a time when your capacity to try again is already stretched. It makes sense to hesitate. What would actually help is a way to lower the stakes of that first step.
I started The Resilient Blueprint as a survivor, for survivors. Everything I share here I look at carefully, with this audience specifically in mind: people who are safe, who are ready to do the work, and who don’t have the bandwidth to wade through resources that aren’t going to help. When I share something, it’s because I think it can assist.
What Is Talked?
Talked is an Australian online therapy platform that connects adults with registered psychologists, clinical psychologists, counsellors, and psychotherapists via video, phone, or in-app messaging. It’s accessible via browser or the Talked app on iOS and Android, and is available to people anywhere in Australia.
Sessions are 50 minutes long and priced per session with Medicare rebates being applied. Medicare covers up to 10 sessions per year, and Talked processes the claim automatically after each session, with the rebate paid directly to your bank account. A bulk-billed online GP appointment to get your referral and Mental Health Treatment Plan is available through Talked’s partner service if you don’t already have one. Private health insurance, NDIS (self and plan managed), WorkCover, and employer-funded (EAP) pathways are also supported.
Why It’s Here
One of the quieter barriers to starting therapy after abuse is the trust problem. Not knowing whether you can trust a therapist you’ve never met, and not wanting to spend money finding out you can’t. Talked addresses this directly with something most platforms don’t offer: unlimited free 15-minute video consultations with as many therapists as you want, before you commit to a paid session. You can book with one, decide they’re not the right fit, book with another, and keep going until someone feels right. Your therapist can’t see your other bookings.
For people who’ve spent time in relationships where their instincts were questioned and their capacity for trust was eroded, having that no-cost way to shop around is a big thing. The ability to also choose your session format (video, phone, or text messaging). adds another layer of control that matters. Some days, a phone call is as much as you can manage. Talked doesn’t require you to be camera-ready.
How It Works
Browse the therapist directory or use the matching tool to find someone whose approach and experience align with what you’re working through. Book a free 15-minute video consultation, no cost, no commitment, and you can do this with as many therapists as you like until the fit feels right. Once you’ve found someone, book a full 50-minute session via your preferred format. If you’re using Medicare, Talked handles the rebate claim after each session with no paperwork on your end. You’ll need a Mental Health Treatment Plan and GP referral, which you can get through their bulk-billed online GP partner if you don’t have one already. Between sessions, you can message your therapist directly through the app, and personalised session insights are delivered to your app after each appointment.
Who This Is For and Who It Might Not Be
This might resonate if you:
- Are based in Australia and want to access one-on-one therapy online with a properly registered psychologist or counsellor, with the flexibility to choose your own session format.
- Have hesitated to start therapy because of the risk of wasting money on someone who isn’t the right fit. The unlimited free consultations directly address that barrier.
- Want the convenience of Medicare rebates handled for you automatically, without having to navigate the admin yourself.
It might not be the right fit if:
- You’re outside Australia. Talked is only available to Australians, and all therapists are AHPRA-registered, making it country-specific by design.
- Even with the Medicare rebate, around $121 per session is a real cost, and up to 10 sessions per year may not be enough if you’re working through complex trauma. For those without Medicare access or for whom that cost is a barrier right now, MindSpot (free and government-funded) may be a better first step.
