At some point, you might feel like you need to talk to someone other than your journal or those you’re close to. Dealing with the freeze, or fawn reaction, you’re having, or the way certain things still send your body into alarm mode even though you’re safe. This is why it can be helpful to lean on someone trained to help you understand what you’re actually looking at.

I have had that need several times and taken the opportunity to search for a professional to support me as needed. I built The Resilient Blueprint as a survivor, for healing from an abusive relationship and trying to make sense of what happened and what it’s left behind.

What it is

BetterHelp is an online therapy platform that connects you with a licensed therapist via browser or mobile app. Therapy happens through four formats: text messaging at any time, live chat, phone sessions, and video sessions. You can use a mix depending on what you need.

All therapists are licensed by their state board and hold a minimum of three years’ experience and 1,000 supervised hours. Membership costs $70–$100 per week (USD), depending on location and therapist availability; select insurance plans are accepted, and HSA/FSA cards are eligible. Financial aid is available for those who qualify. The platform is accessible in approximately 200 countries, though most therapists are US or UK-based. Membership can be cancelled at any time.

Why it’s here

Understanding is one of the most underrated parts of recovery. Feeling better matters of course, but a lot of survivors also need to make sense of what happened. Why was the relationship so hard to leave? Why do you react the way you do to things that wouldn’t seem to faze someone else? Those questions deserve a real answer, and trained professionals can often help guide you to find your answers.

What therapy offers that no article or resource can is a sustained relationship. Someone who holds your full picture across time that wasn’t part of your life during the events. A therapist who understands relationship trauma can help you connect patterns that otherwise feel random or shameful. BetterHelp’s format also lowers a real logistical barrier: no commute, flexible scheduling, and the ability to message your therapist between sessions when something comes up rather than waiting for the next scheduled hour. That’s genuinely different from traditional therapy, and for some people, it’s the difference between reaching out for help or not.

How it works

  • Sign up, complete a questionnaire about what you’re looking for, and get matched with a therapist. Typically, within a few hours to a couple of days.
  • Access your therapist via text messaging at any time; schedule live sessions (video, phone, or chat) when it suits you.
  • Additional features include 150+ digital worksheets, goal tracking, a journaling tool, and free access to 20+ weekly live group sessions.
  • Switching therapists is easy and penalty-free if the match doesn’t feel right.
  • BetterHelp is not appropriate for urgent crises. Therapists cannot prescribe medication, provide a formal diagnosis, or fulfil court order.

Who this is for and who it might not be for

This might resonate if you:

  • Are past acute crisis and want structured, ongoing support to understand what happened and how it shaped the way you respond.
  • Have wanted therapy but found in-person logistics to be a barrier; unable to find someone local, commuting, or scheduling around work.
  • Want the flexibility to message your therapist as things surface between sessions, rather than holding everything until the next appointment.

It might not be the right fit if:

  • Digital privacy is a concern for you, and for many survivors, it is.
  • You need in-person contact, medication support, or a formal diagnosis. BetterHelp’s therapists cannot provide these.
  • Budget is a hard constraint. At $70–$100 per week, it can add up, and financial aid is available but not guaranteed.
